Supercharge Your Study – 5 Simple Study Strategies That Have A Massive Impact On Your Results
Are you a natural student, or would you rather be doing anything but studying? Having some on-paper qualifications can open up opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be available. So, whether you enjoy the mental stimulation or are only doing it because you have to get it done, it is always handy to have some tricks up your sleeves to help you get the results that you need. Here are five simple strategies that anyone can implement to help them learn what they need to know:
Practice Makes Perfect
One of the biggest mistakes that I made at school was reading trashy magazines when I was supposed to be studying and hoping that the information would somehow seep into my brain through osmosis. Unfortunately, that isn’t how it works. It is all about the grind. Whether you download a bunch of past year practice exams or book in with one of the best VCE English tutors in town, you need to put in the time to get the results. It sounds obvious, but the earlier that you start preparing, the more likely you are to understand and retain all the information.
Switch Off From Distractions
When you are sitting down for a study session, try to remain as focused as possible. Clear away the mess on your desk, so you have a clean and tidy space. Put your mobile phone away, switch off the music, and turn off your email notifications if working on your computer. Don’t go on your social media or answer the phone when your friends call. The same goes for when you are in class – the more that you are concentrating when you first hear the information, the easier it will be to recall.
Ask Lots of Questions
If there is something that you don’t understand, make sure that you ask your teacher to explain it to you. If it still doesn’t make sense, talk to one of your friends who takes the same class. Sometimes you need someone new to explain the concept to you in a slightly different way for it to sink in. Depending on your method of learning, you may need to talk it through out loud, or write it out and work it through on paper.
Take Regular Breaks
Stopping every half hour or 45 minutes for a ten-minute break and getting up to stretch, go to the bathroom or get a quick snack will help you remember the information you are learning for a prolonged period. Studies have shown that short and regular revision sessions are more effective than an all-night cram session so, don’t feel guilty about stopping to recharge. Don’t use this time to jump on social media, though, as this doesn’t give your brain a proper opportunity to rest and recuperate.
Choose Your Timing
People commonly ask whether they should study in the morning or at night. There is no easy answer. Some people find they do their best work early in the morning; others are night owls and can concentrate better when the sun goes down. Figure out when you seem to get more done and try to set a regular schedule, so you always study at that time. Make sure that you don’t miss out on valuable sleep though – sleep deprivation won’t help you get the results that you want.
Be persistent, work hard, and you will be on the right track to passing that exam and getting the qualification that you want. It will all be worth it in the end.
