World Refugee Day – June 20, 2013
June 20th is World Refugee Day, an extremely important date on the calendar which brings global awareness to a crisis that affects millions of lives. I’d like to support and share some information on this great initiative with our Simple Living Australia readers.
This year MEC Global Solutions has partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to add a social element to further increase visibility on this worldwide issue.
In Australia and other developed countries such as the UK, US, NZ and Canada we are extremely lucky and privileged to live in such stable and safe environment which allows us to enjoy the comforts of so many basic necessities of life, items which we often take for granted. Think about it – freedom of religion, speech, clean water, education, welfare, Medicare and so many other things that we don’t even think about let alone appreciate.
As it’s an election year in Australia, the topic on refugees or “boat people” is big news and depending on which government is discussing the situation, it can be very negative. Getting a different view of the situation from an organisation (UNHCR) which actually works to protect and resolve refugee issues worldwide is eye opening.
Truly understanding how and why a person might be a refugee and getting an understanding of what they have to go through is incredible. The strength that many of these unfortunate people have is extraordinary.
Having a personal finance site which helps so many Australian’s with financial issues (first world problems eh?) is very rewarding and I enjoy doing it. But being able to do a little part in bringing awareness to this important issue is even better.
Join me with sharing this cause within your networks thorough social media if you have it or just forwarding this post to your family and friends. There are heaps of ways of getting involved, whether it’s through sharing the topic with others, becoming a donor or going to support an event, any help is welcomed and appreciated.
